Julian
Shaw has built an impressive career in both filmmaking and
film criticism, despite his tender age. He won the 2007 IF
Independent Spirit Award for his debut documentary ‘Darling!
The Pieter-Dirk Uys Story’, which was also runner-up
in the Panorama Audience Awards at the 2008 Berlinale, voted
on by some 20,000 filmgoers. ‘Darling!’ won Best
Documentary Medium in Australasia’s largest international
documentary competition DOCNZ, where Julian also received
the coveted DOCNZ Best Emerging Filmmaker award. Julian won
an Australian Film Institute Award for film criticism in 2002.
He is the author and photographer of the ground-breaking photo-novel
‘Modern Odysseus’, featuring Australian actor
Colin Friels.

Jonathon has
worked with some of Australia’s great talents over a significant
period as a film and television producer and businessman. He has
produced a feature film, several documentaries and more as well
as running his successful voice-over artist management company EM
Voices and other business interests. His work with Julian Shaw commenced
in 2005.
For his work in feature films, documentaries and news, Jonathon
has been a recipient of a Producer’s Fellowship Award from
the Australian Film Commission.

Frans grew up
in the Blue Mountains near Sydney. When he left school he went directly
into film and television, working at Fontana Films, and then as
a freelance assistant editor in the early 1970s.
During the late 70s and early 80s he worked collaboratively with
directors such as Phillip Noyce, Gillian Armstrong and Philippe
Mora researching as well as assistant editing. He has since worked
with an impressive list of drama and documentary directors including
Vincent Ward (Map Of The Human Heart), John Duigan (Romero, Fragments
of War - The Damien Parer Story), Don Featherstone (The Beach, The
Maitland Wonder, David Williamson, Right Said Fred, Tales Of Helpmann),
Phillip Noyce (Echoes Of Paradise and the restoration of News front).
Frans has continued to develop his passion for the art and craft
of creative editing by working on many and varied non fictional
arts and socially relevant documentaries and dramatic work of many
genres. With some of the finest first time directors as well as
the very established.
His years of working with great actors and performers assisting
them to maximize their endeavors continue to be a highlight and
a much anticipated experience always.
Some of those players include: the late Raul Julia, Nicole Kidman,
Jack Thompson, the Divinyls, Russell Crowe, Hugo Weaving, Phil Collins,
Joel Edgerton, Kylie Minogue, Judy Davis, Silverchair, Chris Haywood,
Tony Barry, Wendy Hughes, Crowded House, Bill Hunter.
In 1998 Frans collaborated with Sydney film festival director Paul
Byrnes to organize a highly successful forum on Phillip Noyce's
film Newsfront to mark its 20th anniversary. Out of that came the
decision to restore the print of Newsfront, and to produce a DVD
version. Frans produced and directed the restoration process and
DVD in consultation with Phillip Noyce. He directed and edited the
DVD sound track of interviews with key cast and crew reminiscing
on the film making process. He is a forthright supporter of the
need of film history and culture preservation and is involved with
one or more projects to ensure this at any time.
Frans has been a guest lecturer on editing at Sydney University,
and has devised and delivered lectures at the Australian Film and
Television School on editing and on the treatment of archival material
in film. For two years he was the chairman of the pre-selection
committee for the AFI Awards for editing and he has twice been a
judge for the Byron Kennedy Award and a panel member for the 'Golden
Eye' Awards. Since 2001, Frans has been one of the panel of judges
for the 'best editor of a feature film' in the IF awards. In July
2004 Frans was given the highest accolade by the Australian Editors
Guild when he was awarded the right to be credited as an ASE for
his services to the art and craft of film and video editing. In
2006 he was a pre selection judge for the Sony Tropfest Film Festival
in Sydney.
Frans also has always had a great interest in directing and is a
long standing member of the Australian Screen Directors Association.
He has been developing the documentary on Phillip Noyce, Better
To Reign In Hell? with producer Helen Panckhurst.
Darling!
